"The sage who dies for the world, has just been born for history": the intellectual trajectory of José María Regil, First Half of the 19th Century

Abstract

This study examines the trajectory of José María Regil, a Campechano jurist and pedagogue during the first half of the 19th century. The purpose is to investigate his influence as an intellectual in a time of important transformations in the field of education. In theoretical-methodological terms this work follows the line of the historiographical current promoted by François Dosse baptized as Intellectual Biographies, It also takes into account the approach proposed by Mary Kay Vaughan on the New Biography and the proposals of Herrejón Peredo on “relational links” and “life decisions” as key elements for the construction of an intellectual biography. The sources that support this chapter correspond to classical and recent bibliography that includes the work Estadística de Yucatán published in 1853 of the author of the biography in addition to some documents of the time
